The Structure

A committee of parents help to administer the pre-school and organise fund-raising events.

Our well-qualified staff has many years of experience between them. Our Pre-School Leader and Assistant Leader are joined for each session by two further assistants. Holding up-to-date and relevant qualifications, including NVQ3 and First Aid, all training is ongoing.

The pre-school has adopted policies on Admissions, Special Needs, Behaviour Management, Confidentiality, Health and Safety, Child Protection, and Staff Employment. These are included in our Operational Plan, which is available for you to see.

Parental Involvement

We are proud to have a minimum ratio of 1 adult to 6 children – for under 3's it is 1 to 4. A parent helper is present at each session to ensure this ratio, with every parent expected to attend their allocated duty rota – approximately one each term.

This time, as well as being enjoyable, provides an opportunity to view and contribute to your child's Early Years Foundation Stage Record. Naturally, you are welcome to speak to the staff at any time.

Six Key Areas Of Learning

Within daily planning, the staff incorporates six areas of learning:

  • Personal, social and emotional development;
  • Communication, language, and literacy;
  • Mathematical development;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world;
  • Physical development;
  • Creative development.

A Typical Session

At Bear Flat Pre-School, children are welcomed into a stimulating environment where many different types of activities are set out. These can include sorting, role-play, books, painting, construction, play dough, water and sand.

We believe that children benefit hugely from the freedom to explore creatively and imaginatively at their own pace.

The variety of resources on offer to inspire them represent different lifestyles and cultures.

We encourage the children to question and consider the world around them, as well as inviting them to join in adult-led activities, such as craft, cookery and storytelling.

Social skills and self-confidence are promoted during snack-time and whilst tidying up.

Circle Time, where children are invited to bring in topic-related items from home to discuss with their peers provides further opportunities for the development of talking and listening skills.

They also learn the value (and fun!) of participating in singing, rhymes and action songs, which also promote these important skills.

A period of physical activity in the spacious hall encourages the children to use resources that may be unfamiliar to them – such as beanbags, balls and obstacle courses. Musical instruments, music and dance are also used to enhance their physical abilities, as well as boosting confidence and self-esteem.

Finally, relaxing story-time concludes the enjoyable and stimulating session. The children are then seated with their belongings and creative work, ready for when their parent / carers arrive to take them home.
